BUILDING A FASHION CAREER - SOME TRUTHS

You guys wanted to know more about me and fashion immigrants. Well, I actually have been through something that adds up pretty well here. On the post “ROLLING INTO 2021 KICKING ASS!” I mentioned that I hate fake modesty and being small when talking about your conquers, dreams, and goals. As an immigrant, it is funny how we have people stereotyping and decreasing our knowledge. I constantly deal with this and, let me tell you, once you decide to step up and put yourself out there like the badass you are, not only feels great inside out, but it also puts you in a position where people cannot doubt you and you can never look back to feeling small.

As I mentioned a couple of times (probably in every post I have ever written here, lol) I come from a great and very traditional family. I grew up with people watching me and looking up to me my entire life. Even though I attended the best schools in the south of Brazil, back home I would never have to worry about career or work. Once I moved to the US and decided to stay, everything changed. I had to get a job and learn how to be an adult (lol, but for real).

I always knew I would have to start small. Literally, start from the bottom and earn my way up. And I knew that once I found something I love, I would prove I am worthy. And this is exactly what happened. But as an immigrant, we tend to suck all the energy in (good and bad). We create walls that make us swallow any ego or sense of self-respect and tend to accept a lot of stereotyping jokes because we are too focus on working hard or we are just afraid of “omg, I cannot lose this job” and “omg, I just started at this job, I will let this joke go…” and we end up feeling small because we never stood up for ourselves and just let those walls keep growing. My entire career has been like that. And like any other immigrant, I sucked it up and kept going.

Every job I had I always opened up about how much I want to grow and want to be the best. When I had people laughing and making jokes about my goals, I used to be quiet. But last time I decided to speak up! I not only have been educated to be in fashion, but I also have more experience than it looks like. I not only work hard, but I also do my best and I not only want to do better and better, but I also want to help and inspire people - I have SO much to share and help people.

I got to an age where I have no more patience for bullshit and people with small heads making jokes about immigrants. Standing up for my goals here, and sticking to my plan of kicking ass in 2021 is not only a priority, but also a way to show that you can do the same and, immigrant or not, we all go through the same shit building a career. But educating yourself, being the best professional you can be, standing up for yourself, and showing your value is what will make you grow and be successful!

Speaking up and expressing how successful I aim to be, not only made me feel much better, but it put me in a position like “do not mess with me because I am that badass who came to NYC to kick ass”. It even made me realize that my goals and courage are bigger than I could ever imagine and moving towards my dreams, staying focused on my path and the desire of doing BIG is not an option. It is a fact!

I recently read a book called “you are a badass at making money” by Jen Sincero. And this book sums up really well my post “ROLLING INTO 2021 KICKING ASS”. You have to stop acting in your comfort zone. You have to stand up for yourself. Stand tall. Behave like the boss you want to be. Educate yourself to know what you are doing and, most importantly, moving towards your goals means you have to take risks and you have to make decisions. Sometimes these decisions might break your heart, make you uncomfortable or scare the shit out of you. Remember, you can have your ego or you can have your dreams. But also remember to stop feeling small and to be determined when you talk about your goals and dreams.

I honestly was not planning on a “self-help” kinda post here. We all go through some sort of struggle building a career. Immigrant or not. But especially as an immigrant and especially in NYC (lol, but for real!). We create these walls to protect ourselves, but the truth is: there is a person behind this tough image and this person has feelings, just never allow them to come out because this is NYC and this is business. You let your emotions out and you are screwed. You do not have to let your emotions out, but you can be the best professional possible and you can stand for your goals and dreams instead of letting people with small heads talk nonsense to you.
