IMMIGRANTS SERIES - Moving to NYC part 2 Finding a Job

Alright, I hope the first post “IMMIGRANTS SERIES- Moving to NYC part 1 "Where To Live?" was helpful and, if you are moving to NYC, you took the first step. Now, when moving to the big apple, you will definitely need a job. No, it will not be your dream job. It will probably be a job you do not even like, but it will pay the bills and, let’s face it, this is NYC, any job is a job.

Ok, if you just got to NYC and are looking for a job, obviously craigslist, Facebook ads and LinkedIn are the best ways to start looking, but if you need to find something fast and something that will pay decently, the entertainment industry is the best option. NYC is full of bars and restaurants and they are always hiring. Besides that, you can always get a job in any local store as a salesperson, receptionist, or even babysitter.

Regardless of the job you chose to go for it, there are always a couple of steps for you to take. Here are a couple of tips to get yourself a job quickly.

1. Show your face!

Regardless of where and what job you will be doing, putting your face out there is the way to go. Go inside bars and restaurants and show your face it is the best way to do it. Do not be shy, show interest, show proactivity, even without a resume, start walking around your hood.

2. Still, learning English or have no idea where to go first? Try sticking to your own people!

As an immigrant, sticking around your people is a great way to start, which means that once you arrive in this city and need a job, try finding business and business owners from your country.

If you are from Brazil, like me, go to Brazilian restaurants and bars, Brazilian stores, Brazilian beauty salons… anything that can possibly turn into a job. Remember, you might not have any experience in the entertainment industry or work in a beauty salon but that does not mean you cannot learn. So it depends on you! How willing are you to put your ego aside, start working, be proactive and learn? This is one of the most important things about moving to the US and making it in this country!

3. Background experience and resume

Ok, when I first moved to NYC and was desperately looking for a job, people used to tell me to lie a bunch of BS on my resume. Here is my advice: do not do that! Ever!

Be honest, show transparency, and show that you have work ethics, even if you have no experience in that industry.

All the times I was honest about not having the experience I got hired and learned everything I could. So be honest! Always!

4. Certain jobs will require experience and there is no way you can run away from that

For some jobs, like babysitting, you need to have experience or a good recommendation. This kind of job normally pays well, but it is harder if you just arrived in town and have no background recommendation.

Also, big corporations will probably be the most difficult place to find a job quickly. Even as an assistant, if you are going for a big corporation, there are more steps for you to be hired.

Ok, I hope these tips are helpful, give you some direction, and help you get yourself a job quickly. The next step is getting a social life.
