Vogue Business recently published a very interesting article on what influencer marketing budgets should look like in 2025. I highly recommend reading it, as it provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of influencer collaborations and how brands should allocate their budgets accordingly. However, I wanted to take a different approach to this conversation and focus on emerging designers who have little to no budget for influencer marketing.
Influencer partnerships can be a powerful tool for brand visibility, but many new designers struggle to afford paid collaborations. That doesn’t mean influencer marketing is off the table—it just requires a more strategic and resourceful approach. Here are some effective ways emerging designers can work with influencers while keeping costs low:
1. Gifted Collaborations (with Strategic Budgeting)
While gifted collaborations don’t require direct payment, they still come with costs. Emerging designers must budget for extra samples and production units dedicated to influencer gifting. Creating a well-thought-out plan on how many influencers to target, which products to send, and how to minimize waste is essential. Additionally, consider:
Partnering with brands that can provide packaging and complementary add-ons to your gift kits, reducing your costs.
Selecting micro-influencers with engaged audiences who align with your brand values rather than focusing on big names.
Establishing clear expectations for content in exchange for the gifted product to maximize exposure.
2. Offer Affiliate Commissions Instead of Flat Fees
Instead of paying influencers upfront, offer them a commission for each sale generated through their unique referral link or discount code. This way, they are incentivized to promote your brand while you only pay for actual conversions. Platforms like RewardStyle and Shopify apps can help streamline affiliate tracking.
3. Collaborate on Content Creation
Many influencers, especially micro-influencers, are open to creating content for brands in exchange for exposure and experience. Instead of paying an influencer to promote your product, offer to feature them on your website, social media, or even in your brand’s lookbook. This mutually beneficial relationship can build credibility and increase both parties’ reach.
4. Leverage Influencer Takeovers and Swaps
Allow influencers to take over your Instagram or TikTok for a day, providing them with creative freedom to showcase your brand to their followers. In return, you can take over their platform or collaborate on a live discussion about fashion, sustainability, or entrepreneurship. This method costs nothing but time and planning.
5. Utilize Barter System Partnerships
Beyond gifting products, consider trading services. For example, if you have skills in sketching, styling, or consulting, you can offer your expertise in exchange for influencer promotion. Some influencers are open to collaborations that provide mutual benefits beyond monetary exchange.
6. Host Small, Intimate Events for Organic Engagement
Instead of sending costly PR packages, invite a few local influencers to a small, curated event where they can experience your brand firsthand. Providing an immersive brand experience can be more impactful than a simple product delivery. Collaborate with local venues or brands to offset event costs.
7. Engage with Your Community to Build Brand Advocates
Not all influential voices are professional influencers. Your most loyal customers, fashion students, or industry professionals can become organic brand advocates if you engage with them. Encourage user-generated content by reposting their photos and stories, offering incentives like exclusive previews or discounts for active brand supporters.
8. Maximize TikTok and Instagram Trends for Virality
Instead of relying on influencers, create engaging and trend-driven content that has the potential to go viral on its own. Many emerging designers have gained traction simply by showcasing their design process, behind-the-scenes work, or transformation videos. The key is to stay authentic and consistent with your storytelling.
I have worked with many different emerging designers and have guided them through the entire product development process, which includes structuring a business plan that accommodates their unique needs and budgets. If you’re looking for personalized strategies to launch and scale your fashion brand, I’d love to help.
