INSIDE THE FASHION INDUSTRY - The Buzz Sports Are Creating in Fashion & What It Means for Emerging Designers

Sports in Fashion Fashion and Sports Trends 2025

Ok, ok, ok… I know! Talking about sports has been one of my favorite things lately—if you follow my Instagram, you’ve probably noticed! But how could I not talk about sports when two of my favorite worlds are not only working together seamlessly but also driving inclusivity in fashion, introducing new materials, reshaping business strategies, and breaking outdated taboos like "If you love sports, you can't be a fashionista."

To top it all off, the Super Bowl just happened, and let’s be honest—all eyes were on what the players were wearing, plus the stunning trophy crafted by Tiffany & Co. AND, of course, New York Fashion Week is in full swing, giving us a glimpse into the future of fashion, where sports have been making a major impact on the runway.

SO… with all that in mind, let me talk about sports a little more!

The fusion of sports and fashion has become a defining trend in recent years, and 2025 is proving to be an even more transformative year for this relationship. More than ever, luxury brands, independent designers, and streetwear labels alike are investing in the sports world, whether through high-profile collaborations, the development of performance-driven collections, or the integration of sportswear elements into everyday fashion. For emerging designers, this growing synergy presents a unique opportunity to expand their reach, tap into a broader consumer base, and create collections that resonate with today’s dynamic market (Vogue Business).

The Rise of Sports-Inspired Fashion

The influence of sports in fashion is no longer limited to sneaker culture or the popularity of athleisure. Instead, sportswear has evolved into a powerful cultural force, shaping the aesthetics and strategies of some of the biggest fashion houses. According to Emily Rhodes, creative foresight analyst at The Future Laboratory, the relationship between fashion and sports is being driven by a focus on functionality, inclusivity, and the ever-growing cultural relevance of athletes and major sporting events (Vogue Business).

Luxury fashion brands have fully embraced this movement. Louis Vuitton, for example, has partnered with the NBA to design travel cases for the championship trophy and has released basketball-inspired capsule collections. Gucci, known for its bold and eclectic style, collaborated with Adidas to create a high-end sportswear collection that maintained Gucci’s signature luxury essence while appealing to a younger, more active audience (Vogue Business). Similarly, Prada has entered the sportswear space with its partnership with Adidas, combining the Italian house’s minimalist design with the technical innovation of Adidas’ performance wear. These collaborations have allowed luxury brands to expand their market while maintaining their identity and exclusivity.

Why Emerging Designers Should Embrace Sports Elements

  1. Broader Market Appeal: Integrating sportswear elements into fashion collections allows designers to reach a wider demographic. Modern consumers seek clothing that is both functional and stylish, making sports-inspired designs highly desirable. The athleisure movement, spearheaded by brands like Lululemon and Alo Yoga, has proven that blending performance fabrics with streetwear aesthetics can lead to commercial success. For emerging designers, offering pieces that fuse comfort, movement, and style can open doors to a broader target market (Quartr).

  1. Cultural Relevance: Sports have a global impact, uniting people across different backgrounds. By incorporating sportswear elements, designers can tap into this cultural significance. The resurgence of football jerseys in fashion, for example, showcases how sportswear can evoke nostalgia while remaining contemporary. High-end brands like Balenciaga have capitalized on this trend by releasing football-inspired jerseys that align with the brand’s oversized, avant-garde aesthetic (The Guardian). Emerging designers can take a similar approach by incorporating sports influences that resonate with their own brand vision.

  1. Innovation Opportunities: The intersection of fashion and sports has led to groundbreaking advancements in textiles and design. Performance fabrics like moisture-wicking materials, compression wear, and UV-protective textiles are no longer limited to athletic brands—they are now being adopted by high-end labels. For instance, Moncler has successfully merged luxury with sports functionality through its Moncler Grenoble line, which offers high-performance ski wear without compromising the brand’s heritage in craftsmanship and style (Social Honeycomb). Emerging designers who explore technological fabrics and ergonomic cuts can position themselves at the forefront of fashion innovation.

How to Incorporate Sports Elements Without Losing Brand Identity

For designers who want to embrace the sportswear trend without straying from their core aesthetic, strategic integration is key. Here are some ways to achieve this balance:

  • Use Performance Fabrics in Classic Silhouettes: Instead of designing full athletic wear, emerging designers can incorporate sports materials into their existing styles. For example, a structured blazer made from breathable, stretch fabric maintains a polished look while offering enhanced comfort.

  • Draw Inspiration Without Direct Imitation: Rather than creating traditional jerseys or tracksuits, designers can take inspiration from sports culture and reinterpret it in a sophisticated way. Thom Browne, for instance, has incorporated rugby and tennis aesthetics into his collections without deviating from his signature preppy tailoring.

PS: Thom Browne is one of my favorite examples! They adapt the rugby and tennis aesthetics into a brand that is well known for its tailored and chic appeal!

  • Collaborate with Athletes or Sports Institutions: Partnering with athletes or sports teams can lend authenticity to a brand’s entry into the sportswear space. Dior’s collaboration with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) demonstrates how luxury brands can align themselves with sports in a refined manner, designing off-field uniforms that maintain Dior’s signature elegance.

PS: Also a great example of a brand that incorporated sports without losing its aesthetics! Another good example is Labrum, which I already mentioned about on my previous blog “INSIDE THE FASHION INDUSTRY - Fashion & Football Love Affair”.

The intersection of sports and fashion offers emerging designers a pathway to create collections that are functional, culturally relevant, and innovative. By strategically incorporating sports-inspired elements into their designs, brands can tap into new markets while staying true to their identity.
